Calibrate your display

What is Display Color Calibration?

Display Color Calibration helps you improve your display color and make sure that colors are represented accurately on your monitor.

To help you create an accurate calibration, make sure that your monitor is set to its native resolution, or the resolution that your monitor was designed to display. To learn how, see Get the best display on your monitor.

Note

Note

If you have a display calibration device and software, it's a good idea to use them instead of Display Color Calibration because they'll give you better calibration results.

To start Display Color Calibration

  1. Tap or click to open Display Color Calibration. Administrator permission required You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.

  2. In Display Color Calibration, tap or click Next to continue.

  3. Change the color settings until they look right to you. Read the following sections to learn more about each setting and how to change it.

Settings in Display Color Calibration

The color settings that you can change, and how you change them, depend on your monitor and its capabilities. You might not be able to change all of the different color settings when using Display Color Calibration.

Basic color settings

To get an accurate calibration, it's a good idea to set the basic color settings on your monitor before you continue.

  1. While you're on the Set basic color settings page in Display Color Calibration, press the Menu button on your monitor (it's likely to be on the front). An on-screen menu will appear.

    Note

    Note

The menu and monitor buttons vary by model and manufacturer. To get help using the buttons for your monitor, check the manual.

  2. Use the monitor buttons to navigate through the on-screen menu to verify (or adjust) one or more of the following settings:

    • Locate the color menu for choosing the color mode, and then set your display to sRGB.

If you see the option to select a color temperature (also called a white point) rather than a color mode, set the color temperature to D65 (or 6500).

    • Find the menu to set gamma. Set gamma to 2.2, which is the default setting.

    • If you can’t find any of these settings, look for a setting in the on-screen menu where you can reset your display to the factory default color settings, and then choose that option.

    • If the basic color settings aren't shown in your monitor's on-screen menu, just tap or click Next to continue.

Gamma

Gamma settings help make sure that details like shades of color and shadows look right on your screen. In Display Color Calibration, you adjust gamma by using a sample image.

  1. On the How to adjust gamma page, follow the instructions and look at the sample images that appear, and then tap or click Next.

  2. On the Adjust gamma page, drag the slider so that the small dot in the middle of each circle vanishes. Tap or click Next to continue.

Brightness

Brightness determines how dark colors and shadows appear on your screen. You can adjust brightness so that dark colors appear accurately, and so that you can still see shadows, outlines, and other details in the darker images. If brightness is set too high, black colors appear light and gray.

  1. On the Find the brightness and contrast controls for your display page, locate the brightness and contrast controls on your monitor (usually there are buttons or other controls on the monitor), and then tap or click Next.

  2. On the How to adjust brightness page, look at the sample images, and then tap or click Next.

  3. On the Adjust brightness page, adjust the brightness by doing one of the following, depending on your monitor:

    • If your monitor has a Menu button on the front edge, press it to see an on-screen menu. Locate the Brightness setting.

    • If your monitor has a Brightness button on the front of it, press it, and then adjust the brightness.

    • If you're using a laptop, try adjusting the brightness by holding down the Fn key, and then pressing the corresponding function key to increase (The Increase brightness button) or decrease (The Decrease brightness button) the brightness of the display.
  4. On the Adjust brightness page, increase or decrease the brightness until you can distinguish the shirt from the suit in the picture. If you see a large X in the upper-left corner of the picture, lower the brightness until the X disappears. When you're done, tap or click Next.

Contrast

Contrast determines how white and light colors appear. You can adjust contrast so that highlights in images appear accurately.

  1. On the How to adjust the contrast page, look at the sample images that appear, and then tap or click Next.

  2. On the Adjust contrast page, adjust the contrast by doing one of the following, depending on your monitor:

    • If your monitor has a Menu button on the front edge, press it to see an on-screen menu. Locate the Contrast setting.

    • If your monitor has a Contrast button on the front of it, press the Contrast button, and then adjust the contrast.

    • On the Adjust contrast page, set the contrast as high as it will go while you can still see the buttons and wrinkles on the person's shirt in the picture. When you're done, tap or click Next.

Note

Note

There are usually no controls for adjusting the contrast on a laptop display.

Color balance

The color balance improves how shades of gray appear on your display.

  1. On the How to adjust color balance page, look at the sample images that appear, and then tap or click Next.

  2. On the Adjust color balance page, drag the red, green, and blue sliders until the gray bars appear as neutral gray colors without any color cast. Tap or click Next to continue.

See your calibration

After you've changed settings in Display Color Calibration, you can compare your new calibration to your old one, and then choose the one that looks best to you.

  1. On the You've successfully created a new calibration page, tap or click Previous calibration to see your old display calibration.

  2. Tap or click Current calibration to see your new display calibration.

  3. Do one of the following, depending on which calibration you want to use:

    • To use the new calibration, tap or click Finish.
